In October 2023, Aalayam commemorated its tenth anniversary by constructing a tuition centre to benefit the rural area of Thirupalaivanam in Thiruvallur district. This hub of learning serves as a space for underprivileged students from the area and villages nearby to focus on their lessons. Many of the students come from one-room homes that may not be suitable for distraction-free learning.
Over the past 16 months, the centre has supported these students to come together under one roof for their studies. Now, Aalayam plans to go a step further by paying an honorarium of Rs. 1,500 per month to a teacher who will supervise the children. As a pilot project, we hope to raise Rs. 9,000 to pay the teacher for a period of six months.
